Introduction
::
Goa, one of Indias smallest states with a territory of 3,702 sq km is
cradled in the Sahayadri range in the Western Ghats. It is bound by the Arabian
Sea on the west, Maharashtra to the north and Karnataka to the east and south.
Here, long beaches are interspersed with open grasslands and low hills.
History ::
Goa had long flourished as a port, particularly under the military protection
of the Vijayanagar commander Madhav Mantri, who managed to protect Goa from
the acquisitive Muslim sultans. In the 1470s the however, Goa finally
succumbed to the Muslims and was ruled by Adil Shah of Bijapur. Then in 1508
Alfonso de Albuquerque arrived from the Portugal and captured the port, a
victory that led to 450 years of Portuguese rule.
It is the Iberian aura, the cultural alloy of Latin and Oriental, the coexistence
of Hinduism and Christianity that epitomizes the distinct identity of Goa.
The Portuguese invested a hitherto predominantly Hindu society with their
religion, attitudes and lifestyles, and Goas ethos and élan are
the consequences of this encounter. Like the stained-glass windows on the
churches, Goas fabric is a mosaic of bright and variegated colors -
the flamboyant designs of Latin exuberance set against the russet hues of
traditional Indian attitudes and lifestyles.
Fairs
& Festivals ::
Gos Carnival:The Goa carnival is an annual event held in mid February. The streets
of Goa come alive with colour for three days and nights just before Lent. Celebrated
by the Christian population in Goa, the festival is an integral part of the
Portuguese heritage of the state that was a dominion of Portugal till 1961.
The carnival epitomizes fun-loving culture, characteristic to Goa. Zatra-It
is celebrated in all temples of special importance being at Mangueshi, Nagueshi,
Ramnathi, Kavlem, Madkai, Kundai, Shiroda, Khandepar, Borim, Kapileshwari, Mulgaon,
Fatorpa, Amona, Shirgao, Marshel, Mala-Panaji, Mapusa, Velinga, Karmali and
